The Institute Library
 

THE INSTITUTE LIBRARY

To assist scholars in their work of study and research, there is at the Institute, a General Library, with a reading room attached. The library specializes in humanities and social sciences, though it has a good collection of books in other streams too.

The library also has a Junior Section for children aged between 13 and 16 years as well as a Children's Section for children aged between 6 and 12. These sections keep a good collection of books too. The General Library has over 2,03,766 books including 5,021 rare books and 424 Indian and foreign journals. The Junior Section of the Library has over 6,655 books and the Children's Section contains 14,525 books. Besides, there are rich collection of books in the Research Section on Indology and exclusive special titles at Vivekananda Archive.

The library timing are from 10.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. The library remains closed on Sundays and other Institute holidays.

THE INSTITUTE MUSEUM

 Museum

The Institute has a small museum and Art Gallery to help people, specially scholars from outside India to have a glimpse of Indian art and culture in its diverse forms. The attractions here are the presentation of the Ramakrishna movement and Indian culture. Paintings, ornaments and art-works like pata-chitras are among the notable collections of the museum. In addition there are a number of old parchments or "puthi"s. The museum remains open from 10 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. on days except Sundays and Institute holidays. Attached to this is the SARADA DEVI SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS AND CRAFTS for the members of the Junior and Childrens Library.


The Institute Prayer Room THE INSTITUTE PRAYER ROOM

In keeping with the spirit which animates all its activities, the Institute has a Universal Prayer Room, open to all, where people can pray and meditate in the manner they like best. There is also a chapel dedicated to Sri Ramakrishna, the symbol of harmony and unity, where regular devotional services are held in the evenings.

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES, LECTURES & DISCOURSES

Throughout the year, the Institute has a busy schedule of lectures, debates, elocution competitions, seminars, symposia, study circles, scripture classes and religious congregations through which, knowledge, both modern and ancient, is imparted to public. Devotional songs and musical programmes constitute regular features of the Institute's activities all the year round.

VALUE ORIENTED ACTIVITIES

To encourage the youth to study Ramakrishna Vivekananda literature, the Institute has several programmes of which the Vivekananda Study Circle is one. The Study Circle meets twice a month. The participants are also offered for field study of how teachings of Swami Vivekananda are being implemented by the Ramakrishna Math and Mission.

RESEARCH PROGRAMMES

Calcutta, Burdwan and Jadavpur Universities recognize the Institute as a centre for learning and research. This entitles the Institute to guide scholars in their pre-doctoral and post-doctoral research. An Academic Council consisting of distinguished scholars plans and co-ordinates the research activities of the Institute. The Indian Council of Social Science Research, the Indian National Science Academy, Rashtriya Sanskrit Samsthan and the Indian Council of Philosophical Research, New Delhi, also recognize the Institute as a centre for research. The Centre for Indological Studies & Research oversees the research activities besides fostering the studies of Sanskrit, Scriptures & Philosophies. A ten-month course in Indology is conducted by the CentreAlso attached to the Centre, is an archive devoted to preserving the books and literature on Sri Ramakrishna - Vivekananda movement.

 International House INTERNATIONAL HOUSE

Attached to the Institute, there is an International House meant for the scholars who come from different parts of India as well as from abroad at the invitation of the Institute or of universities and other learned societies for study or research or simply for exchange of ideas with Indian scholars. This bringing together of scholars of different nationalities help create a bridge that unites minds and spirits having different backgrounds.
